Your Kid's Bike Helmet is Their Most Important Safety Accesory

The most important accessory you can buy your kids is a bike helmet. No child should ever be allowed to ride a bike without some form of protection for their head. Years ago we rode around without a helmet and most of us survived, but the amount of traffic on the roads has multiplied enormously and people are living at a much faster pace. This in turn means the likelihood of your child being in an accident has gone up exponentially.

There are several different styles of children's bike helmets available all of them are designed to make sure that in the event of an accident your child's head is protected from injury. Not only should the child who is riding a bicycle be wearing a helmet but any child in a carrier seat or trailer being pulled behind a bike should also be wearing one.

According to surveys done by insurance companies in the U.S. over 700 bicycle riders die every year in tragic accidents, of these over 75% die of head injuries. These could have been prevented by the simple use of cycle helmets for kids. These simple safety helmets are inexpensive but are so often overlooked by parents who do not stop to realize the danger they are putting their kids in when they send them out without one.

The original kid's bike helmet was made of foam and then covered with a hard plastic shell. While these large round helmets may not look fashionable they were made with only one thing in mind, to provide the best protection in the event of an accident. By being so large they were meant to keep the skull as well protected as possible in the event of impact. A child's brain can be easily damaged if it is subjected to sudden impact such as when their head hits the pavement.

As kids grow older they will begin to resist the idea of wearing a helmet especially around the age of 12 or 13 when they begin to think that they are invincible and nothing can happen to them.  When they reach this age it might be a good idea to change the style of kid's bike helmet to one that looks a little more like a motorcycle helmet.  Buying a helmet like this is more likely to result in your child continuing to wear it whenever they go out riding.

Not all children are easy to convince that they should wear a helmet and for the younger crowd there are options that can help get them to want to wear a helmet. Most kids like to watch the professional mountain bike stars perform tricks on the television in front of huge audiences. These professionals would never dream of riding their bikes and doing these stunts without wearing the appropriate head protection. Mountain bike helmets for kids are made to look just like the ones that the pros wear and offer good protection from most accidents.

The hardest part is getting your kids to wear a helmet in the first place, one easy way to convince them that it is the best thing to do is to always make sure that whenever you ride your own bike you never do so without a helmet. While there is no guarantee that wearing a helmet will save a life, being without one is an easy way to guarantee that they will get seriously hurt in an accident. Before your kids get on their bike make sure they have their helmet on.
